Is It difficult to build artificial intelligence models for playing games such as chess and Go? I would like to make some small game playing AI that can play a few games just for fun. It does not need to be the best

If you are interested by CHESS there are many open-source AI chess engines that you can learn how they work. But the problem is that they mostly are only for CHESS. They cannot play other games easily. It is a very interesting topic. Some engines are very good.

It depends on the game. Different games, different models to play. For machine learning, some of the best models use renforcement learning but sometimes more simple approach can work better.
