What is the difference between data mining and big data?

Post by Gerald »

Hi,
The new forum is very nice.

I am taking a data mining course and I want to know what is the difference between data mining and big data?

Big data means the data just need to be big like thousands of GBs?

Big data is about the volume of data. some people say that big data is data that is too large to be processed by a single computer, which seems like a good definition.

besides that some people have proposed other definitions like the five Vs:
Volume: lot of data
Velocity: data that is updated at high speed
Veracity: data that may be false
etc.

But data mining and data science, is there a difference? I see many people talking about the data science nowadays instead of the data mining. Please let me know what is the difference if any.

For me, data mining and data science are very similar words.

In general, data mining is an older term, and data science is the newer, more trendy word.

I observe that data science is often used by people who have a statistic background, while data mining tend to be more used by people with a computer science background. That may not always be the case, but it is my impression.
